DriveSmart is being rolled out across Motability vehicles, but many disabled drivers are reporting something far more troubling than “cheaper insurance.” The system tracks movement, driving behaviour and phone activity in ways that feel uncomfortably close to a digital tag. In this video, I break down what’s happening, why people are worried, and what this means for independence, privacy and daily life.
Currently, Motability customers taking out their first lease, under 30 years old or with someone under 30 on their policy must install the DriveSmart App on each phone. A wedge sits in the vehicle, but seemingly does very little.
This rollout is part of a wide range of changes to new contracts from 1st July 2026.
Further stories are coming forward about these and how they are affecting disabled people and their carers.
If you have any comments on this subject, I would love to hear from you.
